Stress Is More Complicated Than It Appears – 162th Edition

Managing stress is complicated because not only are there different types of stress, but each has its own characteristics, symptoms, treatments, and intensity.

Acute stress is the most common type. You recognize it when your computer goes blank, you are on deadline, and your heart starts beating rapidly. You relish it when a new client chooses you as coach rather than your competition. When your dog tried to jump out the window of your moving car you were in full panic mode from stress.

Because it is short term, acute dress does not usually cause as much damage as chronic stress. Some of the more common symptoms are:

Emotional distress or anxiety, depression.
Muscular problems such as back pain, pulled muscles,
Stomach problems such as heartburn, diarrhea, and constipation
Elevated blood pressure, dizziness, and rapid heartbeat.

The other type of stress is chronic stress, the grinding stress that wears you out before you are ready to stop being productive. Chronic stress destroys bodies, minds and lives. It is the stress of families who are having trouble making ends meet.
